p1731
Bizen Beer Drinker
This Bizen sake cup is by the Intangible Cultural Property holder Yuichi Yamamoto, son of the legendary master craftsman Toshu Yamamoto. It is a piece that pushes thinness to the absolute limit, as if exploring the very boundaries of potter's wheel technique. The superb wheel work, a hallmark of the Yamamoto school, is truly astonishing to behold. Naturally, this thinness ensures a remarkably crisp and pleasant mouthfeel when in use. The vibrant coloration, characteristic of Yuichi Yamamoto, who is renowned for his stable *hidasuki* (fire-cord) patterns, is also magnificent.

Signed wooden box (double-braced)
Diameter 8.3cm × Diameter 8.2cm × Height 10.5cm

Yuichi Yamamoto is the eldest son of Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto and began his path in ceramics under his father in 1959. In 1968, he became the first to introduce a gas kiln to Bizen ware. Driven by a scientific spirit of inquiry, he researched ways to transform *hidasuki*, which often relies on chance, into intentional design. He devised the "Himon" and "Hisai" techniques of artificial *hidasuki*, using an extract boiled down from rice straw like paint to draw flowers and patterns on the clay. He produces a wide range of works, including vases, tea utensils, jars, and large bowls. He became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1967. In 1995, he published "Bizen Ware Techniques: Tradition and Creation," an introductory book for artists. In 1996, he won the Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Arts Exhibition. That same year, he was designated a holder of Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Property.
Awards: Numerous honors including the Kaneshige Toyo Award, Okayama Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, and the Tea Ceremony Arts Exhibition Grand Prize.
