p2273
Rock Cup
This Bizen-yaki yunomi (tea cup) is by Yukio Tomori, who began his path in ceramics in Okinawa before studying under Taisetsu Sueishi in Bizen. Seeking to capture the "most beautiful moment" in the ever-changing form of the clay on the potter's wheel, his style makes the clay appear as if it has been fired while still in its dynamic, living state. This vibrant shape creates a powerful flow of earth, giving the mysterious impression of being drawn into a whirlpool of clay. When filled with sake, it looks as though you have poured it into a vessel, and if you gently rotate the cup while following the flow of the earth, you can truly savor the time spent enjoying your drink.

"Yukio Tomori Special Feature"

No box
Diameter 10.9cm x Diameter 10.7cm x Height 8.2cm

Yukio Tomori was born on Miyako Island, Okinawa. During high school, he encountered yaki-shime (unglazed, high-fired) works fired in Okinawan wood-burning kilns, which inspired him to pursue a path in ceramics. He trained at the Tsubayama Pottery in Okinawa starting in 1984. Later, while traveling through various pottery regions, he was moved by Bizen ware and spent four years studying under Taisetsu Sueishi from 1987. In 1999, he built his own anagama kiln and became independent after his first firing. Since holding his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2001, he has held solo exhibitions in various locations including Fukushima, Chiba, Osaka, Ehime, and Miyako Island.
