p2506
Bizen sake cup
This is a Bizen sake cup by Kei Fujiwara, an artist beloved by all for a warm style that radiated his bold, open-hearted nature and kindness. It is a work from his middle period, featuring a rich, adzuki-bean-colored clay base with deep, flavorful orange *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings. The size is well-balanced, providing a comfortable weight that is neither too light nor too heavy, reflecting the masterful craftsmanship of an artist who understood sake intimately. Its simple, gentle aesthetic offers a sense of relief just by looking at it, calling to mind the warmth of Fujiwara's own personality. (Please note that while there is almost no sign of use, we ask for your understanding.)

Keisuke-signed box (with four-way locking joints)
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.6cm x Height 5.1cm

Kei Fujiwara (1899–1983, born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture) entered the world of Bizen pottery at the suggestion of Atsuo Masamune, a scholar of Japanese literature living in Honami, Bizen. He learned wheel-throwing techniques from Umegei Mimura, and from 1941, refined his skills by learning firing methods from his fellow Living National Treasure, Toyo Kaneshige. Following the simplicity and boldness seen in Kamakura and Muromachi period utilitarian wares, he produced vases and flower vessels with a generous, clear style. The artistic education he absorbed in his youth influenced his work. In 1954, he became the second person to be designated a Living National Treasure for Bizen pottery, and in 1958, he became a director of the Japan Kōgei Association. In 1977, he established the Kei Fujiwara Memorial Museum in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture.
Major awards: Okayama Prefecture Cultural Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Chugoku Cultural Award; designated Honorary Citizen of Bizen City and Honorary Citizen of Okayama Prefecture; posthumously awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Class (Junior Fifth Rank).
