p2550
Ibe Guinomi
This is an Ibe guinomi (sake cup) by the master craftsman Mitsuru Isezaki, who loved Bizen ware and made great contributions to Bizen. It is not a flashy piece of kiln alteration, but rather has a refined, understated finish based on sangiri (kiln-floor reduction firing). Within the silver world centered on the sangiri, the gold-tinged reddish-purple clay body serves as a perfect accent. The piece is a condensation of Master Isezaki’s craftsmanship, visible in features such as the solid foot and the dynamic rim. While it may not be flashy, it is a quiet, calm, and easy-to-live-with piece.

Original signed wooden box (shiho-zan style)
Diameter 6.5cm × Diameter 6.2cm × Height 6.1cm

Master Mitsuru Isezaki was born in 1934 as the eldest son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki. He learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and majored in sculpture at the Okayama University Special Art Course. As an authentic tea ceramicist, he pursued Momoyama-style forms, clay qualities, and firing techniques. He used climbing kilns and medieval-style anagama kilns depending on the piece, eschewing electric or gas kilns in favor of firing with split pine wood. He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Toyo Kaneshige Prize in 1974. In 1994, he received the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award, and in 1998, the 15th Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize. In March of that same year, he was designated as a Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property holder. He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.
Awards: Toyo Kaneshige Prize, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and many others / Prefectural Exhibition invitee
