p2720
Bizen sake cup
This is a Bizen sake cup by the late master Toyo Kaneshige, the first-generation Living National Treasure and the great restorer of Bizen ware. Crafted from the white clay that he favored in his later years, it features a gentle *hi-dasuki* (fire-cord) pattern that appears as if veiled over the surface. The body has a substantial and dignified presence, complemented by the stylish, rhythmic shaping of the rim. Inside the cup, the scattered *tobi-goma* (accidental sesame-seed ash glaze) and the softly expressed *hi-dasuki* harmonize beautifully with the delicate white clay, resulting in a piece that is both sophisticated and infused with the warmth characteristic of Bizen ware.

Original signed wooden box (two-way cross-braced)
Diameter 6.9cm × 6.8cm × Height 6.0cm

Toyo Kaneshige (1896–1967, born in Imbe, Bizen City) was born the eldest son of Baiyo Kaneshige, from a branch of the Kaneshige family, one of the six traditional Bizen pottery families. He studied under his father and first gained acclaim for his handmade *hohin* (teapot). From the Taisho to early Showa periods, he conducted extensive research and succeeded in reviving the clay texture of Momoyama-period Bizen ware; it was around this time he began using a potter's wheel and shifted his focus to tea ceramics. He deepened his friendships with Handeishi Kawakita, Toyozo Arakawa, and Kyusetsu Miwa, and after the war, he expanded his artistic range under the influence of Rosanjin Kitaoji and Isamu Noguchi. For these contributions, he is known as the restorer of Bizen ware. He was the first Bizen potter to be designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property, and in 1964 and 1966, he was invited as a guest lecturer at the University of Hawaii. In 1967, he performed a pottery demonstration for Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun during their visit to Bizen.
Major awards: Chugoku Cultural Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Award, Medal with Purple Ribbon, Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fourth Class.
