p3182
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a Bizen sake cup from a much earlier period by the master artisan Mitsuru Isezaki, who loved Bizen ware and made significant contributions to the Bizen region. It is a rare piece for Isezaki, who is typically associated with a gentle style, as it features a wild and rugged yohen (kiln change). The clay body burns with a vivid crimson, as if responding to the intense, raised ash-covered glaze. The form itself is very orthodox and easy to use, and the rim area—where the scarlet color is most prominent—has very little ash coverage, making it comfortable to drink from. (Please note that as this is a much earlier work, there is some age-related staining on the ash-covered areas.)

Signed wooden box (lid with two cross-pieces)
Diameter 6.6cm x Diameter 6.5cm x Height 5.8cm

Mitsuru Isezaki was born in 1934 as the eldest son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki. He learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and majored in sculpture in the special art course at Okayama University. As a dedicated practitioner of traditional tea ceramics, he pursued the forms, clay textures, and firing methods of the Momoyama period. Depending on the piece, he chose between using a climbing kiln or a medieval anagama kiln, refusing to use electric or gas kilns and insisting on firing with pine wood. He became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Kaneshige Tōyō Prize in 1974. In 1994, he received the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Achievement Award, and in 1998, he won the 15th Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize. In March of that same year, he was designated as a Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property holder. He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.
Awards: Kaneshige Tōyō Prize, Okayama Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and many others / Invited contributor to Prefectural Exhibitions
