{"product_id":"p3368","title":"Bizen ware sake cup","description":"This is a superb Bizen sake cup by Takashi Soga, who challenges the aesthetic of antiquity by recreating the same conditions under which ancient Bizen ware was fired. Without the use of any machinery such as electric pottery wheels or thermometers, this piece was fired using a primitive kiln based solely on his own empirical knowledge. While pieces with excellent \"tsuchi-aji\" (clay character) make one excited to see how that character shifts across the entire form, the magnificent clay character of this work transcends excitement and left me truly astonished. The dark, withered Shiso (beefsteak plant) color, which looks both like iron fired to the core and weathered rock, is deeply aged, and the thin, faint coating of ash further enhances this weathered quality. The \"nuke\" (unfired or flame-touched areas) and the interior base appear as if the composition of the clay itself has transformed, taking on a rich, mellow orange reminiscent of Nanban-style unglazed ware, which, combined with the bursting specks of iron, creates a breathtaking landscape. There are few works that consist of nothing but clay character, yet possess the power to fascinate people so completely through that character alone.\n\nSigned wooden box to be provided at a later date (please allow some time for shipping).\u003cbr\u003e\nDiameter 6.8cm × Diameter 6.5cm × Height 5.7cm\n\nTakashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.
