p3546
Bizen-yaki teacup
This is a Bizen tea cup from an earlier period by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, an artist who has always led the Bizen ware world with an inexhaustible creative power. Included is a biography of his career up to 1998, indicating that this work was created just before he was designated a Living National Treasure. Featuring a footed base, a style no longer in production, its clean, upright silhouette is unified with the lively landscape created by the anagama (tunnel kiln). Finely scattered sesame glaze (goma) can be seen on the rim and the bottom of the interior, evoking the firing process of the anagama, in which flames are said to rush deep into the kiln in an instant. (Please note that as this is an earlier work, there may be signs of age, though it shows little sign of use.)

Signed wooden box (double-crosspiece lid)
Diameter 8.1cm × Diameter 8.0cm × Height 9.9cm

Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozan Isezaki, a master known for his intricate ceramic carvings. He began learning ceramics at a young age, and after graduating from the Special Art Course at Okayama University in 1959, he entered the path of a professional ceramic artist. His body of work is wide-ranging, encompassing traditional pieces such as vases, plates, and tea ceremony wares, as well as sculptural works including ceramic wall reliefs and objects. In his creative process, he places great importance on both shaping and firing. He is known for a style overflowing with a contemporary sensibility that leverages the unique characteristics of his materials and kilns (anagama, climbing kilns, and electric kilns). Furthermore, he is a leading figure in relief art, having presented numerous works in this field. He became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966. From 1978, he served as a special lecturer in fine arts at Okayama University for nine years. In 1998, he and his brother, Mitsuru, were both designated as Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Property Holders, and in the same year, he served as the Secretary General of the Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association. In July 2004, he was designated as a nationally recognized Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property.
Awards: Recipient of the Kaneshige Toyo Award, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Excellence Award at the Chanoyu Modeling Exhibition, and many others / Prefectural Exhibition Jury Member
