p3634
Hidasuki Beer Drinker
This new Bizen beer tumbler is by Makoto Kaneshige, who inherited the Maruyama Kiln as the eldest son of Sozan Kaneshige and captivates many with his harmony of delicate, elegant earthen qualities and powerful forms. Created in accordance with the philosophy of Kaneshige Bizen—the essence of which is to avoid excessive decoration and bring the clay to life—the minimal diamond-shaped molding at the rim harmonizes with the whole, revealing a magnificent silhouette. The bare, earthy surface, lightly spiced with fine sand grains, allows you to enjoy the throat-feel and aroma of the beer, and afterwards, to cherish the living clay in the palm of your hand, while the surface, dampened by the chill and the beer, provides a feast for the eyes. The Hidasuki (fire-cord) pattern, which allows for no deception, has been fired beautifully, creating a stunning contrast not only in color—white and red—but also in texture.

View blog post for this beer tumbler

Signed wooden box (lid with two cross-pieces)
Diameter 7.3cm x Diameter 7.1cm x Height 12.1cm

Makoto Kaneshige is the eldest son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige. He entered the path of pottery under his father in 1969 after graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University. He became independent in 1979. He primarily creates tea ceramics on the potter's wheel and is known for his deep, rich firing technique. He strives to eliminate decoration as much as possible, focusing on channeling his soul directly into the clay. He rarely enters public exhibitions, preferring to focus his energy on solo exhibitions, which he holds actively every year at department stores in Okayama, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto. He also held a solo exhibition in Munich, Germany, in 1995, and exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition in 1997.
