p3814
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a sake cup by the late master Kazan Matsuda, a true artisan of Bizen ware who faithfully inherited the traditional techniques as one of the leading figures in authentic tea ceramics. The craftsmanship, including the slightly constricted shoulder and the wide foot, is quintessentially Kazan—loyal to the fundamentals. Looking at the foot, one feels a sense of tension that naturally makes one sit up straighter. The *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings on the red clay body create a striking aesthetic on both the front and the interior. (While it shows absolutely no signs of use, please note that it is a pre-owned work.)

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.5cm × Diameter 6.4cm × Height 5.7cm

Kazan Matsuda was the second son of the renowned master Kazan Matsuda III and learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age. Upon graduating from the ceramics department of Bizen High School in 1955, he succeeded to the name Kazan IV. Alongside his own pottery work, he succeeded his mentor, Zenji Uragami, as a lecturer in the same ceramics department, serving for seven years starting in 1961. He primarily created tea ceramics, as well as flower vases, sake vessels, and tableware, striving to capture the earthy quality of ancient Bizen in his semi-underground anagama kiln, with a particular focus on wine-colored surfaces and golden *goma* (ash glaze) effects. He received the Asahi Prize at the Contemporary Japanese Ceramics Exhibition in 1962. He was selected for the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition consecutively starting in 1963 and became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966. He was awarded the Kaneshige Toyo Prize in 1982 and exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition in 1997. In 2002, he was designated as an Okayama Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property holder. He passed away in 2003.
Awards: Kaneshige Toyo Prize, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Award, Asahi Prize at the Contemporary Japanese Ceramics Exhibition, and many others / Prefectural Exhibition Juror
