The cup features a mysterious coloration, with a vivid red body that looks as if it were flushed with scarlet all over, overlaid with his characteristic rust-colored \"hidasuki\" (fire-cord) markings. The rust-colored hidasuki, neither too thick nor too thin, appears just right, encircling the entire body which is accented with his signature spatula work, creating a highly accomplished aesthetic. True to Zenji Urakami, who captivated the world with his powerful ceramic sculptures, the cup features a striking foot, scraped away with a spatula after being cut from the wheel, which is simply magnificent.\n\nSigned wooden box (double-slat lid)\u003cbr\u003e\nDiameter 6.4cm × Diameter 6.3cm × Height 5.1cm\n\nZenji Urakami (1914–2006) was born in Imbe and began his career in ceramics under the tutelage of Shunko Nishimura. In 1935, he became a student of Japan Art Academy member Seibo Kitamura to study sculpture, and also studied wood carving under Shin Naito, and sketching under Saburo Okada and Sakujiro Okubo. He was highly skilled at creating life-like animal figurines, bronze statues, and ceramic wall art grounded in realism. His major works include the ceramic wall at Okayama Airport, the ceramic plaque of Grandmaster Oyama at the Kurashiki City Art Museum, the bronze bust of Toyo Kaneshige at the Bizen Pottery Museum, and the ceramic statue of Kojima Takanori in Tsuyama City. In 1973, his ox figurine won a gold medal at the Le Salon 300th Anniversary Exhibition. In the same year, he was designated a Holder of Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Property.
