p4235
Bizen sake cup
This is an exquisite Bizen sake cup by the master craftsman Mitsuru Isezaki, a man who loved Bizen ware and made immense contributions to the region. It is a sake cup of magnificent character, crafted using the "hatoba-iro" (pigeon-grey) Kannon clay that Master Isezaki favored, achieving both a stunning kiln transformation and a vivid texture of the clay. Although this clay was considered difficult to work with, the piece exhibits a brilliant ash-covered kiln transformation while revealing a deep wine-red clay quality in the interior, perfectly balancing aesthetic beauty with functional excellence. The body, finished in a four-sided shape, is incredibly stylish, and the "katamigawari" (split-style) combination of ash-covered kiln transformation and yellow sesame-like flash patterns gives it a remarkably modern feel. (Please note that there is a flake on the waist of the cup, as shown in photo 7.)

Original wooden box (with two-sided slats)
Diameter 6.6cm x Diameter 6.2cm x Height 6.0cm

Master Mitsuru Isezaki was born in 1934 as the eldest son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki. He learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and majored in sculpture in the special art course at Okayama University. As a master of authentic tea ceramics, he pursued the shapes, clay textures, and firing methods of the Momoyama period. Depending on the work, he utilized both climbing kilns and medieval-style anagama (tunnel kilns), eschewing electric or gas kilns in favor of traditional pine wood firing. He became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Toyo Kaneshige Prize in 1974. In 1994, he received the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award, and in 1998, he won the 15th Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize. In March of that same year, he was designated as a holder of an Okayama Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property. He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.
Awards: Toyo Kaneshige Prize, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition, and many others / Prefectural Exhibition invitee
