p4326
Kuroshuten
This is a new black sake cup by Koichiro Isezaki, who was born the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and who breathes new life into the world of Bizen ware with his extraordinary sense and skillful sculpting ability; this piece is specifically focused on firing. It was hand-built by tearing a lump of clay in two, stacking the pieces, and forming them by hand, leaving the tear marks as a dynamic, rock-like landscape that exudes immense power. Using black clay often utilized for swords, the cup was placed in an area of the kiln with intense heat, resulting in a shower of sesame glaze; the milky-white sesame intermingles with sky-blue kiln transformations to create a uniquely striking appearance. In other areas, the landscape shifts dizzyingly between the black base, blue kiln transformations from scorching, and intense, whitened sesame, all blended together. The interior is also a startling work; it was fired so intensely that the clay once ruptured, only for the opening to be sealed by a generous coating of melted sesame glaze.

View Koichiro Isezaki's blog post

Includes signed wooden box (shiho-zan style)
Diameter 8.3cm × Diameter 8.1cm × Height 5.4cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki. The Isezaki family is a prestigious lineage in Bizen ware; his grandfather was Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki, and his uncle was Intangible Cultural Property holder Mitsuru Isezaki, and Koichiro himself aspired to pottery from an early age. After graduating from the Tokyo Zokei University sculpture department in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States. He spent approximately two years studying pottery under Jeff Shapiro, a ceramic artist living in New York City, which greatly broadened his perspective on art and ceramics. After returning to Japan in 2000, he trained under the guidance of his father and his father's apprentices. In 2002, his work was first submitted to and selected for the Tanabe Museum of Art Tea Ceremony Exhibition.
