p4390
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln of Mr. Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen was fired. To replicate the style of the Old Bizen era, he avoids the use of firebricks and other modern materials; consequently, the kiln is fired in a way that defies all modern common sense regarding thermal efficiency. Because of this, it displays an exquisite "clay flavor" (tsuchiaji) that transcends contemporary aesthetics and approaches the quality of Old Bizen. The brownish surface features a subdued *hidasuki* (fire-cord) pattern; while at first glance the appearance is understated and plain, it reveals a powerful clay surface that seems to unleash the very life force of the earth—a testament to Mr. Soga’s reverence for Old Bizen. The *hidasuki*, which leans more toward a deep crimson than a standard red, exudes a refined maturity, and its appearance against the dry, wheat-colored surface is the very embodiment of authentic Old Bizen *hidasuki*. The wheat-colored surface itself is dotted with small black specks caused by iron content, which adds an exquisite allure to the dry texture.

Read blog post

Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for delivery).
Diameter 6.4cm × Diameter 6.3cm × Height 5.3cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.
