p4537
Bizen sake cup
This is a Bizen-yaki sake cup by the master craftsman Mitsuru Isezaki, who loved Bizen ware and made immense contributions to the region. Among Master Mitsuru's sake cups, this piece features a classic form: a tall body combined with a slightly flared rim. It is a "katamigawari" (split-body) design, with one half displaying a rich shiso-red and the other a yellow sesame glaze (goma) accompanied by scorch marks, allowing you to enjoy both the deeply expressive quality of the clay and the sophisticated aesthetics of the firing. True to Master Mitsuru's philosophy of prioritizing clay preparation in the tradition of his great predecessors, the shiso-red hue is as heavy, deep, and rich as an aged wine.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included.
Diameter 6.3cm × Diameter 6.2cm × Height 6.0cm

Born in 1934 as the eldest son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki, Mitsuru Isezaki learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and majored in sculpture at the Okayama University Special Art Course. As an authentic practitioner of tea ceramics, he pursued Momoyama-style forms, clay quality, and firing techniques. He selectively used climbing kilns and medieval anagama kilns depending on the piece, eschewing electric or gas kilns in favor of firing with pine wood. He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Kaneshige Toyo Award in 1974. He received the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award in 1994 and the 15th Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize in 1998. In March of that same year, he was designated as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property by Okayama Prefecture. He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.
Awards: Kaneshige Toyo Award, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and many others / Prefectural Exhibition Guest Artist
