p4613
Bizen Black Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen black sake cup, freshly fired from the kiln of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, who continues to lead the Bizen ware world with an inexhaustible creative power. It is a latest work fired in the Anagama kiln at Mt. Koya, which he restored together with his father, Yozan, and his brother, Mitsuru; this sake cup possesses both the chic elegance and dynamic quality characteristic of black Bizen. Having received a generous baptism of fire from the back, high-quality pine firewood has caused gold-dust-like yellow sesame glaze to spill over to the front, forming a magnificent "tamatare" (bead-drip) pattern. Furthermore, around the rim where one drinks, the black Bizen clay and yellow sesame glaze have scorched to produce a subtle blue kiln-transmutation. The tall, graceful form is also highly characteristic of Jun-sensei's work.

Signed box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping)
Diameter 6.8cm x Diameter 6.7cm x Height 7.5cm

Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozan Isezaki, a master of ceramic craft, and studied pottery from a young age before embarking on his career after graduating from the Okayama University Special Art Course in 1959. His works range widely from traditional pieces such as vases, plates, and tea ceremony ceramics to sculptural-oriented works like ceramic wall art and objects. In his production, he places importance on both molding and firing, and his style is characterized by a modern sensibility that makes the most of the materials and the kilns (Anagama, Noborigama, and electric kilns). He has also released numerous works as a leading figure in relief art. He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966. For nine years starting in 1978, he served as a lecturer for the Okayama University Special Art Course. In 1998, he and his brother Mitsuru were both designated as Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Property Holders, and in the same year, he became the Secretary General of the Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association. In July 2004, he was designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).
Awards: Numerous, including the Toyo Kaneshige Award, Okayama Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, and Excellence Award at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition / Prefectural Exhibition Juror
