p4689
Bizen ware 8-sun plate
This is an 8-sun Bizen ware plate by the master craftsman Mitsuru Isezaki, a man who loved Bizen ware and made immense contributions to the region. It is accompanied by a ceramic biography dating to around 2002, suggesting the piece was created around that time. Although fired in a climbing kiln, the work has a light and refreshing finish; its beautiful cherry blossom and scarlet hues look as though spring itself has taken the form of an 8-sun plate. The piece features magnificent *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings on both sides—said to be so stunning that even the legendary Toyo Kaneshige envied them—and these deep, lightning-like patterns stand out remarkably well against the soft, gentle finish of the clay. The wide rim also appears very practical for use, making this a profound piece that reveals new charms the more you look at it.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 23.3cm x Diameter 22.9cm x Height 6.4cm

Born in 1934 as the eldest son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki, Mitsuru Isezaki learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and later majored in sculpture in the special art program at Okayama University. A master of authentic tea ceramics, he pursued the aesthetics, earthen qualities, and firing techniques of the Momoyama period. He alternated between using climbing kilns and medieval anagama kilns depending on the piece, and never used electric or gas kilns, insisting instead on firing with pine wood. He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Toyo Kaneshige Prize in 1974. In 1994, he received the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award, and in 1998, the 15th Tabe Museum Grand Prize. In March of that same year, he was designated as a Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property holder. He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.
Awards: Toyo Kaneshige Prize, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and many others / Invited artist to the Prefectural Exhibition
