p4752
Bizen sake cup
This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup by the Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, an artist who continues to lead the world of Bizen pottery with an inexhaustible well of creativity. This latest work was completed after a nine-day, nine-night firing in the Anagama kiln at Mt. Koya, which he restored alongside his father, Yozan, and his brother, Mitsuru. Among Anagama-fired pieces, this work is rare for its exceptionally dramatic scenery; in addition to an overwhelming amount of yellow sesame glaze (kigoma) that almost entirely covers the outer surface, natural glaze droplets have fallen from the kiln wall, forming kiln-altered colors (yohen) with a mysterious, stalactite-like appearance. The yohen section contains a complex and dreamlike blend of yellow, purple, blue, and various other hues that defy description. Furthermore, the yellow sesame glaze coating the exterior forms massive, jewel-like drips of remarkable, ethereal beauty. The interior is also flooded with an abundance of yellow sesame glaze, as if scooped up with gold dust, making this a vibrant sake cup with a dizzying array of scenery.

Signed wooden box to be provided at a later date (please allow some time for delivery)
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.7cm x Height 7.0cm

Jun Isezaki was born the second son of Yozan Isezaki, a master of ceramic sculpture. He learned pottery from a young age and entered the craft professionally after graduating from the Okayama University Special Art Course in 1959. His body of work is wide-ranging, encompassing everything from traditional vases, plates, and tea ceremony wares to ceramic murals and sculptural objects. In his creative process, he places great emphasis on both forming and firing. His work is characterized by a contemporary sensibility that leverages the unique qualities of his materials and kilns (anagama, climbing, and electric kilns). He is also recognized as a leading relief artist and has presented numerous works in this field. He became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966 and served as a special art instructor at Okayama University for nine years starting in 1978. In 1998, he and his brother Mitsuru were both designated as Holders of Important Intangible Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture, and in the same year, he became the Secretary-General of the Chugoku branch of the Japan Kōgei Association. In July 2004, he was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property).
Awards: Recipient of numerous honors including the Kaneshige Toyo Prize, the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, the Sanyo Shimbun Prize, and an Excellence Award at the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Modeling, among others / Prefectural Exhibition Juror
