p4772
Bizen ware dog figurine (zodiac series)
This is a previous work by Yoshi Matsui, a Bizen ware zodiac rooster figurine, who also mentored future generations as an instructor at a ceramics center. The piece showcases his masterful craftsmanship, which extends far beyond tea utensils and vases—a testament to his background as an educator. It captures a charming Shiba Inu mid-bound, appearing as if it is looking at us while wagging its tail. The gray *sangiri* (kiln-altered color) combined with the yellow *goma* (ash glaze) is fascinating, as it closely resembles a Shiba Inu’s coat.

Signed wooden box (double-slatted lid)
Width 19.8cm x Depth 15.0cm x Height 11.5cm

Yoshi Matsui began his comprehensive study of ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Art and Crafts in 1949. After working at the Kumamoto Prefectural Industrial Research Institute for five years, he returned to Kyoto to study under Yoshimitsu Morino, a Kiyomizu ware artist and Nitten exhibition judge. During his training in 1960, he was invited by then-Okayama Governor Yukiharu Miki to join the Ceramics Guidance Center of the Okayama Prefectural Industrial Research Institute. He devoted himself to fostering young artists until he resigned as director to go independent in 1978.
His firing technique is primarily based on natural glazes and *shiso* (perilla) red tones. Furthermore, he creates vibrant Bizen ware using unique techniques derived from his experience as a Kyo-yaki artist, such as *neriage* (marbled clay), and the application of gold, silver, and indigo glazes.
Became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1969. Designated as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture in 1996. Exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition in 1997. Awards include the Toyo Kaneshige Prize, the Okayama Prefectural Cultural Award, the Okayama Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award, the Sanyo Shimbun Prize, and many others. Served as a judge for the prefectural exhibition.
