p4966
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Tomio Ochi, who has been quietly dedicating himself to kiln firing under the guidance of Anjin Abe, pouring his unfulfilled artistic aspirations into his pottery. This new sake cup features a tea bowl-inspired silhouette, and its solid, substantial form exudes great elegance. Utilizing the firing techniques learned from Anjin Abe, he has achieved a unique surface that harmoniously blends the contrasting elements of a weathered texture and a moist-looking finish. The distinctive "sangiri" firing, reminiscent of a light frost, is a hallmark of the piece and speaks to the uniqueness of Ochi’s kiln firing process. Much like the works of Anjin Abe, the yellow sesame glaze is applied with enough thickness to allow for fine crackling, creating a wonderful depth and providing a perfect accent as it scatters across the piece.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 6.9cm x Diameter 6.5cm x Height 6.1cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

Starting in 1969, while working as a company employee, he studied painting and sculpture at Taka Art.

In 1976, he received instruction under Anjin Abe while serving as his kiln firing assistant in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Anjin Abe’s studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He approaches his Bizen ware pottery by incorporating the experience he gained from studying sculpture and painting.
