p5039
Bizen faceted tea bowl
This is a Bizen tea bowl by the master craftsman Mitsuru Isezaki, who loved Bizen ware and made significant contributions to the region. It is a rare faceted tea bowl; initially crafted with thick walls, it was then meticulously shaved down with a spatula to create its unique character. The spatula work extends not only to the exterior but also to the interior (mikomi), which effectively eliminates the common drawback of faceted pieces being too heavy, while allowing the viewer to appreciate the transformation of the clay's expression caused by the spatula across the entire bowl. To highlight the interplay of textures in the clay, reminiscent of chisel marks in wood carving, the piece was ingeniously fired so that only a small amount of sesame ash glaze (goma) falls on the rim and interior.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 12.6cm x Diameter 12.3cm x Height 8.7cm

Born in 1934 as the eldest son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki, Mitsuru Isezaki learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and majored in sculpture at Okayama University's Special Art Course. As an authentic practitioner of tea ceramics, he pursued the aesthetics, clay quality, and firing techniques of the Momoyama period. He alternated between climbing kilns and medieval-style anagama kilns depending on the work, insisting on using only pine firewood for firing, eschewing electric or gas kilns. He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Toyo Kaneshige Memorial Award in 1974. In 1994, he was awarded the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Achievement Award, and in 1998, he received the 15th Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize. In March of that same year, he was designated as a Prefectural Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property. He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.
Awards: Recipient of numerous honors including the Toyo Kaneshige Memorial Award, Okayama Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Cultural Achievement Award, and the Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Forms Exhibition; invited artist to the Prefectural Exhibition.
