p5190
Bizen Hidasuki Gourd-shaped Sake Bottle
This is a Bizen hidasuki (fire-cord) gourd sake flask by Tomio Ochi, an artist who worked diligently firing kilns under Anjin Abe and continues to pour his unfulfilled aspirations into his ceramics. The hidasuki, which appears to soak into the clay surface with the rich, viscous quality characteristic of Ochi, an artist renowned for his work in this style, is truly masterful. The form, meticulously refined over time, has been fired at an extremely high temperature, and when held, one can feel the high-density vitrification. The dense hidasuki combined with the highly fired clay texture creates a "profound, heavy-set hidasuki" unique to Ochi, unlike any other. The neck is tilted at an angle of approximately 15 degrees and narrowed such that the tip of the little finger cannot fully enter; combined with the gourd's unique form, which temporarily divides the sake into two chambers, it provides an exceptionally smooth pour.

Signed wooden box to follow at a later date (please allow some time for shipment).
Rim 3.5cm x Body diameter 7.8cm x Body diameter 7.7cm x Height 15.4cm Capacity approx. 260cc

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

From 1969, while working at a company, he devoted himself to the study of painting and sculpture at Taka Art.

In 1976, he received instruction while serving as a kiln-firing assistant to Anjin Abe in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Anjin Abe's studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He applies his experience in sculpture and painting to his work in Bizen ware.
