p5222
Black coffee cup & saucer
This is a new black cup and saucer by Masao Akiya, an artist who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates original works imbued with a fresh sensibility. Crafted using the "kuro-bizen" (black Bizen) technique inherited from his mentor, Jun Isezaki, the piece features a remarkably beautiful black color that is deep and lustrous yet warm to the touch. It is created by applying Osafune Isokami black clay to the surface; because it is a slip-applied technique, the shade of black shifts exquisitely depending on the firing conditions. This particular piece possesses a smooth, overall sheen on its black surface, offering a deep luster that is pleasant to hold without any harsh texture. The refined design is characteristically Akiya-esque and highly stylish; rather than relying on complex ornamentation, he has employed a simple design that highlights the beauty of the silhouette and lines, effectively showcasing the chic, modern nature of his black works.

Paper box
Cup: Diameter 11.2cm × 8.4cm × Height 6.8cm
Saucer: Diameter 13.7cm × 13.5cm × Height 1.0cm

Masao Akiya was born in Saitama in 1968.
