p5511
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, who continues to lead the Bizen pottery world with an inexhaustible creative spirit. The piece was fired in the Anagama kiln at Koya-san, which he reconstructed together with his father, Yozen, and his brother, Mitsuru; it features a powerful natural glaze, a hallmark of the Anagama kiln where flames are said to rush toward the back of the kiln. It is a work with an incredibly bold appearance, with almost the entire surface covered in *goma* (ash glaze), save for the interior and a portion of the front. While the entire vessel is completely covered in *goma*, the thickness of the glaze creates varying hues throughout, ranging from yellow *goma* that looks like flowing gold dust to dark brown scorched *goma* and pale blue *kase* (matte glaze), offering a rich variety of textures. The intense *goma* that has flowed into the interior looks as if it were scooped up in the sake cup while inside the kiln, and the *goma* shimmering like gold dust is truly beautiful. The bold form, which matches its bold appearance, remains vibrant, with the shape and the scenery clashing and competing with one another.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 7.3cm x 6.7cm x Height 7.1cm

Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozen Isezaki, who excelled in crafted works, and learned pottery from an early age before entering the field professionally after graduating from the Okayama University Special Art Course in 1959. His works range widely from traditional pieces such as vases, plates, and tea ceremony ceramics to sculptural works including ceramic walls and objects. In his production, he emphasizes both molding and firing, and his style is characterized by a modern sensibility that brings out the features of the materials and kilns (Anagama, Noborigama, and electric kilns). He has also released numerous works as a leading figure in relief art. He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966. From 1978, he served as a special lecturer in art at Okayama University for nine years. In 1998, he and his brother, Mitsuru, were both designated as Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Property holders, and in the same year, he became the Secretary General of the Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association. In July 2004, he was designated as a nationally recognized Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).
Awards: Numerous awards including the Toyo Kaneshige Award, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, and Excellence Award at the Chanoyu Modeling Exhibition / Served as a judge for the Prefectural Exhibition
