p5530
Bizen ware sake cup
This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln, by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, an artist who continues to lead the world of Bizen pottery with an inexhaustible creative power. This piece was fired in the Anagama (tunnel kiln) at Koya Mountain, which he restored alongside his father, Yozan, and his brother, Mitsuru; it features a moist, earthy texture and a unique "haikaburi" (ash-covered) kiln transformation effect. This cup is a rare example of such a kiln transformation, which occurs in only a select few pieces fired in his Anagama. Unlike the typical ash-covered transformations seen in climbing kilns, this one highlights the vivid colors characteristic of Anagama firing, creating an atmosphere that feels somewhat light and vibrant. The exceptional balance between the "goma" (sesame glaze) and the ash-covered surface is a highlight, while the "hidasuki" (fire-cord) markings have also taken on the unique qualities of Anagama firing, appearing as a rich, moist layer over the bright brownish body, giving the piece a truly elegant charm.

Signed wooden box (Shiho-san) included
Diameter: 6.3cm x 6.2cm, Height: 6.8cm

Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozan Isezaki, an artist renowned for his intricate craftwork. He learned pottery from a young age and began his professional career after graduating from the Special Art Course at Okayama University in 1959. His body of work is vast, ranging from traditional vases, plates, and tea ceremony utensils to ceramic walls and abstract sculptural objects. He places great emphasis on both the forming and firing processes, and his signature style, infused with a modern sensibility, makes the most of his materials and the specific characteristics of his various kilns (Anagama, climbing kiln, and electric kiln). He is also recognized as a leading figure in the field of relief art, having unveiled numerous works. He became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966 and served as a special art instructor at Okayama University for nine years starting in 1978. In 1998, he and his brother, Mitsuru, were both designated as holders of Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and in the same year, he began serving as the Secretary General of the Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association. In July 2004, he was designated as a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property).
Awards: Kaneshige Toyo Award, Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Excellence Award at the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition, and many others / Juror for the Prefectural Art Exhibition
