p5686
Shigaraki Sake Cup
This is a newly kiln-fired Shigaraki sake cup (guinomi) by Tomio Ochi, an artist who has been diligently honing his craft firing kilns under the tutelage of Anjin Abe, pouring his ever-unsatisfied creative passion into his pottery. This piece represents a new challenge for Ochi; it is crafted using clay he once collected in Shigaraki with Abe, and, like his Bizen works, it has been fired multiple times. Aiming for a more intense finish this time, the piece underwent seven kiln firings, ensuring the clay was fired thoroughly to its core, resulting in a shimmering orange surface that extends not only to the exterior but also well into the interior of the cup. A creamy natural ash glaze is splattered across the front and the interior, and its unique greenish hue contrasts beautifully against the orange base.

Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for shipping)
Diameter 7.3cm x 7.0cm x Height 6.6cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

Beginning in 1969, while working for a company, he devoted himself to the study of painting and sculpture at Taka Art.

In 1976, he received training and guidance while serving as a kiln assistant to Anjin Abe in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Anjin Abe’s studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He applies his background in sculpture and painting to his approach to creating Bizen ware.
