p5709
Black cup and saucer
This black cup & saucer is the work of Masao Akiya, who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates works brimming with unique originality amidst a new sensibility. It is crafted using the black Bizen technique inherited from his mentor, Jun Isezaki, resulting in a black color that is wonderfully lovely, possessing both a deep luster and a warmth. It uses black clay from Osafune Isokami, which is dissolved and applied to the surface to bring out the black color; because it is a slip-applied clay, the specific shade of black changes exquisitely depending on the firing conditions. This piece features a smooth gloss across the entire black surface, allowing one to enjoy its deep luster while appreciating a soft texture that feels comfortable to the touch. The sophisticated design characteristic of Mr. Akiya is highly stylish; rather than relying on complex ornamentation, it is designed simply to bring the beauty of its silhouette and lines to the forefront, highlighting the chic and modern nature of his black works.

No box
Cup: Diameter 12.3cm x 10.0cm x Height 6.0cm
Saucer: Diameter 12.4cm x 12.3cm x Height 1.2cm

Masao Akiya was born in Saitama in 1968.
