Because the pieces are intentionally placed in front of the fire to achieve the \"hikidashi\" effect, the black slip applied to the surface is washed away by a massive amount of \"goma\" (ash glaze), and the subsequent drawing out and rapid cooling create a unique landscape of intermingled black, blue, and amber tones. The front of the piece, in particular, displays a vivid blue known as \"yohen-so\" (kiln-transmuted blue), which creates a stunning contrast with the dark green of the natural glaze. He studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki starting in 1998, and after a ten-year apprenticeship, he built his own kiln in Bizen and became an independent artist in 2008. He held his first kiln firing in 2009.
