p5785
Oribe Rock Cup
This Oribe rock cup is the work of Yukio Tomori, who began his journey in ceramics in Okinawa before studying under Taisetsu Sueishi in Bizen. It is a signature Oribe rock cup from Tomori-sensei, a man who loves not only Bizen ware but a wide variety of ceramics and wishes to express that diversity in his own work. He became interested in Oribe ware after having a friend fire a piece for him about 10 years ago, and the Oribe glaze he developed through his subsequent research is a stunning, deeply saturated green. The base clay is Bizen clay, and the foot features the *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings that emerged during the bisque firing. The form, which leaves strong throwing lines around the body before rising sharply to the rim, combined with the hue of the Oribe glaze, is reminiscent of bamboo growing vigorously upward.

No box
Diameter 8.9cm x Diameter 8.7cm x Height 9.3cm

*A shipping fee of 500 yen applies.

Yukio Tomori was born on Miyakojima Island, Okinawa. He decided to pursue a career in ceramics after encountering Okinawan wood-fired *yakishime* ware during his high school years. In 1984, he began training at the Tsunami-yama Pottery in Okinawa. Later, inspired by his encounter with Bizen ware during his travels to various pottery regions, he studied under Taisetsu Sueishi for four years starting in 1987. In 1999, he built an *anagama* (tunnel kiln) and held his first firing as an independent artist. Since his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2001, he has held exhibitions in various locations, including Fukushima, Chiba, Osaka, Ehime, and Miyakojima.
