p5924
Bizen ware sake cup with sesame glaze and fire-cord pattern
This is a freshly fired Bizen sake cup with sesame glaze (goma) and fire-cord markings (hidasuki) by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This latest work was fired in June 2020 and was crafted with the intention of achieving both sesame glaze and hidasuki markings, with the fire-cord wrapping around the lower perimeter.

While it is generally considered difficult to achieve both sesame glaze and hidasuki due to the challenge of temperature control, this piece features excellent coloration for both, a testament to Koriki’s masterful kiln firing techniques.

Furthermore, the exquisite temperature control has brought out more than just the glaze and markings; the rich, dense quality of the clay—a result of using high-quality material—is also revealed. The bright brown tone of the clay, particularly from the rim down to the interior, is characteristic of the Kaneshige school and is truly magnificent.

In contrast to the simple, well-executed firing, the form is refreshingly understated. Overall, this is a sake cup that captures Koriki’s unique style and is sure to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.9cm x Height 5.3cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he spent seven years from 1989 studying ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become an independent artist, and held his first firing the following year.
He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since.
In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition for the first time.
