p5940
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen kiln-transmutation (yohen) sake cup, fresh from the kiln of Yoshiteru Kouriki, who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This latest work, fired in June 2020, is a piece in which Kouriki takes great pride, featuring a well-balanced kiln-transmutation of scarlet hues and ash glazing.

True to Kouriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through bold, risk-taking firing techniques, the piece features a deep, charcoal-like black ash glaze around the base, with a matte black kiln-transmutation that seems to absorb light across the rest of the body.

While the scarlet hues of the Kaneshige school generally tend toward white as they are fired more intensely, this piece was fired at just the right moment in specific areas, succeeding in retaining a rich scarlet color despite the high-heat firing.

Kouriki-sensei has shifted toward a slightly thinner construction in his recent work, which, combined with the tea bowl-like form of the constricted waist, results in a more delicate style.
Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.0cm x 7.0cm x Height 5.9cm
Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

He built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and became independent in 1996, firing his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions annually ever since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition for the first time.
