p5944
Bizen Sake Cup
These are new Bizen sake cups from July's kiln opening by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of the past by recreating the same environment in which ancient Bizen ware was fired.
To replicate the kiln-firing style of the ancient Bizen era, these pieces were fired in an all-earth kiln—one that does not use modern firebricks and defies the conventions of contemporary kiln firing.

The all-earth kiln itself functions as one massive piece of pottery; consequently, it transcends modern aesthetics to reveal a supreme quality of earthiness that approaches the character of ancient Bizen ware.

In Soga's kiln, the earth structure itself transforms with every firing, which causes the finish of the pieces to continuously evolve. This time, it produced the brightest scarlet-hued surface seen yet.

This scarlet is not the soft hue seen in climbing kiln firings, but rather a deep red that has emerged as the true color of the earth after a thorough firing. It already possesses an exquisite luster, resembling the surface of a well-worn piece of ancient Bizen.

Furthermore, a subtle, lead-colored ash-covered kiln transformation overlaps with this scarlet hue, creating a landscape of scarlet and blackish-silver that, while entirely different in nature, recalls the ash-covered kiln transformations of a climbing kiln.

It is a mysterious landscape of ancient Bizen-style ash-covered kiln transformation; it is fascinating, as if a potter from the ancient Bizen era had traveled through time to the present and reinterpreted the climbing kiln transformations they witnessed in their own unique way.

While maintaining the simple form of his previous work, this piece has been given a slightly thicker body.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.2cm x 6.1cm x Height 5.4cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built an all-earth kiln that does not use firebricks in Kugu, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his career as a potter in 2013.
