p5969
Bizen sake jar
This is a new Bizen sake vessel, fresh from the kiln this July, by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen ware was fired.

To reproduce the firing methods of the Old Bizen era, the artist avoids the use of refractory bricks—which did not exist at the time—and fires his work in a kiln made entirely of clay, where modern firing conventions do not apply.

The clay kiln itself becomes a massive piece of pottery, and as a result, it produces a superior texture that transcends modern aesthetics to closely rival that of Old Bizen.

In Mr. Soga’s kiln, the clay structure transforms with every firing, a characteristic that causes the finish of the pieces to constantly evolve; this particular work features a fine, deep-toned matte sesame glaze (kase-goma).

This exceptionally fine matte sesame glaze has a surprising roundness that defies its description, offering a wonderful tactile quality that makes you want to roll it in your palms forever.

The central section features a subtle area where the clay is exposed with a faint scarlet hue, creating an exquisite aesthetic that reveals an alluring depth when wet with sake during use.

Designed as a katakuchi sake pitcher—aptly named a "sake vessel"—its stylish form, which feels like a refinement of an ancient Bizen seed jar, is captivating and allows one to fully enjoy Mr. Soga’s unique artistic world.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 8.6cm x 8.5cm x Height 11.8cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He apprenticed under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built a kiln made entirely of clay, without the use of refractory bricks, in Kuku-i, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his pottery career in 2013.
