p5971
Bizen Yohen Large Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen kiln-transmutation (yohen) large sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense while having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This latest work, fired in June 2020, is a powerful vessel inspired by the very large sake cups favored by ancient warlords.

It is a richly fired piece designed to evoke the image of "chugging" sake, featuring a deep and complex landscape based on a fiery, brilliant scarlet that promises to make the sake look exceptional.

One might expect such a bold 13cm-wide piece to be overly assertive, but the wabi-sabi aesthetic created by the matte ash glaze and kiln-transmutation effects envelops its presence, striking a perfect balance.

The rich, viscous scarlet "hike" (color transition) in the interior not only makes the sake look beautiful, but also creates a fleeting yet magnificent scene—as if the clay itself is burning with life—amidst the hard-fired textures surrounding it, leaving one utterly captivated.

With its bold style reminiscent of a period drama, this cup would pair perfectly with cloudy sake (nigorizake).

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style included)
Diameter 13.6cm x 13.3cm x Height 5.0cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has continued to hold annual exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Sculpture Exhibition for the first time.
