p5974
Bizen Hidasuki Sake Cup
These are the latest Bizen Hidasuki sake cups by Yoshiteru Koriki, who pursues his own creative work without pretense while having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
These latest works, taken from the kiln in June 2020, are sake cups with a deeply flavorful Hidasuki (fire-cord) pattern that has been slowly fired in a climbing kiln.

A departure from the conventional combination of Mogusa clay and Hidasuki fired in electric kilns, these pieces feature a bluish clay body adorned with a rich, oil-painting-like Hidasuki. In contrast to the elegant and flamboyant Mogusa Hidasuki, this provides a rustic and austere aesthetic.

Yet, as is typical of Koriki’s meticulous clay preparation, the surface itself remains remarkably supple, allowing one to enjoy a texture that is every bit as smooth as pieces fired in an electric kiln.

The form is deliberately understated to ensure the focus remains on the rich surface texture; it is only after finishing your drink and observing the foot that the artist’s unique carving style reveals itself.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.1cm × 6.2cm × Height 5.9cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Chanoyu Zokeiten (Tea Arts Exhibition) for the first time.
