p5976
Hidasuki Teacup
This is a Hidasuki yunomi by Tomio Ochi, who has worked diligently at the kiln under the tutelage of Anjin Abe, pouring his unfulfilled artistic aspirations into his ceramics.
True to Ochi's preference for high-temperature firing, this piece is exceptionally hard-fired and possesses a profound sense of weight, radiating a strength as if the clay itself has been condensed into high density.

The "surface Hidasuki"—where the scarlet flame patterns dominate more than the earthy texture characteristic of the Abe school—is reminiscent of ancient Bizen ware, transforming the typically graceful impression of Hidasuki into a view of great gravity and presence.

In terms of form, the piece shows extraordinary dedication, featuring a commanding tea reservoir that evokes a cylindrical tea bowl and a powerful vertical rise achieved through the coil-building technique.

As it is a large yunomi with ample capacity, it is a versatile piece that could also be used for shochu or other purposes.

No box included
Diameter 8.5cm x 8.3cm x Height 8.5cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Niihama Technical High School in Ehime Prefecture.

From 1969, while working at a company, he devoted himself to the study of painting and sculpture at Taka Bijutsu.

In 1976, he received instruction under Anjin Abe while serving as a kiln-firing assistant in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Anjin Abe's workshop in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He applies his experience in sculpture and painting to his creation of Bizen ware.
