p5997
Bizen Sake Cup
This Bizen sake cup is by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his handling of clay, firing, and craftsmanship.

It is a "kaburimono" (layered/covered) Bizen-style piece, a term Morimoto uses himself, in which layers of sesame glaze (goma) and flame-scorched patterns (sangiri) overlap to form a profound kiln-altered "garment."

However, the true essence of this work lies elsewhere: it is in the exquisite "nuke" (clear spaces) created during the firing process of that layering. The superb interplay of light and shadow produced within the hard-fired surface is magnificent.

This is not the soft-fired "nuke" often seen in contemporary Bizen, but rather a pursuit of the hard-fired, refined "nuke" that truly existed on antique Bizen surfaces. By adding layers and clearings to a rich, chocolate-like clay base, he has achieved a three-dimensional and dense texture.

The cup form is arguably the best shape to showcase such "nuke," and in this piece, the "nuke" Morimoto wished to express is recreated in the interior (mikomi) in the most simple and clear way possible.

The sesame glaze, which evokes the dense yet minimal aesthetic of antique Bizen, is spectacular, while the mustard-yellow sesame sprinkled lightly from the rim provides an irresistible accent to a clay surface that possesses an antique dignity despite being a new work.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time to ship).
Diameter 8.3cm x 8.0cm x Height 3.7cm

Yoshinobu Morimoto was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1976.

In 1996, he completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center and subsequently became independent after working freelance.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2004, and has since held annual solo exhibitions across Japan, primarily in Tokyo.

He was selected for the Tanabe Museum of Art’s "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition" in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

He exhibited at the "Contemporary Artist Sake Vessel Exhibition" in 2008 and the "Contemporary Artist Tea Bowl Exhibition" in 2009 at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi in Tokyo.

In 2010, he held a solo exhibition at Okayama Tenmaya.
