This is a sake cup in black, one of his earlier works.

Finished with a black slip that has become synonymous with the Isezaki school, this sake cup is believed to have been created between 2007 and 2010.

The well-fired black surface features two distinct textures—areas with a lustrous sheen and areas with a matte finish—where natural glaze and the two clay surfaces are intricately intertwined.

The waist of the vessel is faceted with a spatula into a bamboo-joint-like design, giving it an interesting, somewhat botanical aesthetic reminiscent of a bamboo shoot.

The rim displays a blue "yohen" (kiln-transformation) effect, a highlight of his black-glazed works; the vivid cobalt blue is sure to shimmer beautifully as it absorbs moisture each time you enjoy a drink from it.

This is an unused piece that has been carefully stored since its original purchase, remaining unopened.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 8.1cm × 7.1cm × Height 7.2cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1974 as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the Sculpture Department at Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

He later apprenticed under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City and a former student of his father, in 1998.

After studying ceramics for about two years, he returned to Japan and, beginning in 2000, established his independence as a ceramic artist under his father, Jun Isezaki.
