p6029
Bizen Sake Cup
This Bizen sake cup is by Takashi Soga, an artist who strives to capture the beauty of antiquity by recreating the conditions under which Old Bizen was fired.

To replicate the kiln firing methods of the Old Bizen era, the artist eschews modern firebricks and instead uses an all-earth kiln—one that defies modern firing conventions.

The all-earth kiln itself acts as one massive piece of pottery; as a result, it yields a superlative "tsuchi-aji" (clay flavor) that transcends modern aesthetics to approach the authentic quality of Old Bizen.

In Soga-sensei’s kiln, the earth structure itself transforms with every firing, a characteristic that ensures the finish of each piece is in constant flux. This particular work displays a fine-grained, deep-hued "kase-goma" (matte ash glaze).

The remarkably fine-grained kase-goma possesses an unexpected roundness and smoothness, creating a wonderful tactile sensation that invites you to roll it in your palm indefinitely.

The center of the interior features a delightful scarlet "hidasuki" flame mark—a welcome detail for any sake cup—allowing you to fully enjoy the vibrant crimson that emerges only after a piece has been thoroughly fired in the Old Bizen style.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.7cm x 7.7cm x Height 3.2cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He began his apprenticeship under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built his own all-earth kiln—constructed without the use of firebricks—in Kukui, Bizen City.

He became an independent potter in 2013 and continues his creative work.
