p6030
Ibe Shuten
This is an Ibe sake cup from the previous body of work by Mashiro Aiga, an artist known for creating uncompromising, spirited pieces.

It includes a pottery resume up to 2004, suggesting it is one of his earliest works.

True to Aiga-sensei, who has pursued his craft with incredible dedication and vision from the very beginning, this sake cup possesses a sharp, commanding presence.

As an Ibe-style piece, a different type of clay has been applied over the base body, resulting in a unique, deep blackish-purple texture that stands out like nothing I have ever seen before.

Furthermore, the surface develops a luster only where a small amount of sesame glaze (goma) has fallen, while the rest remains somewhat matte—a contrast that enhances the cup's atmosphere, reminiscent of cooled lava.

Just as its appearance is striking, it also has a significant presence when held; its substantial weight and the rock-like unevenness felt by the fingers give it the feel of a wild samurai, refusing to pander to the palm of your hand.

This is an unused piece that was purchased new and kept carefully in storage without ever being opened.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.7cm × 6.5cm × Height 6.8cm

*Please note that a shipping fee of 500 yen applies.

Mashiro Aiga was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1972.

He graduated from the Okayama Prefectural Bizen Pottery Center in 1997.

In 2003, he built a completely underground anagama kiln in Samukaze.

The following year, he built his second kiln, a semi-underground anagama, and continues to devote himself to his pottery.
