p6042
Bizen Sake Jar
This Bizen sake jar is by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the environment in which ancient Bizen ware was fired.

To replicate the kiln firing style of the ancient Bizen era, the piece was fired in a kiln made entirely of clay—avoiding the use of modern refractory bricks—where conventional modern firing methods do not apply.

The clay kiln itself acts as one massive piece of pottery; consequently, it transcends modern aesthetics to reveal a superb "tsuchi-aji" (clay flavor) that rivals that of ancient Bizen ware.

In Mr. Soga's kiln, the clay structure transforms with every firing, a characteristic that causes the finish of the works to constantly change; this time, it resulted in the brightest scarlet surface yet.

The scarlet hue is not the soft, sweet color typical of climbing kilns, but rather a robust red that has emerged as the true color of the clay through a thorough firing process, already possessing an exquisite sheen that gives the surface the appearance of well-worn ancient Bizen.

The gray ash glaze covering the piece also has a unique texture, soft and rounded like a Nachi stone worn smooth at the bottom of a river.

Inspired by small jars from the ancient Bizen period, the form is versatile and would look beautiful not only as a sake server but also as a vase for flowers.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 11.3cm × 11.3cm × Height 12.6cm; Capacity: approx. 530cc (to the shoulder).

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built a kiln made entirely of clay without the use of refractory bricks in Kukui, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his career as a ceramic artist in 2013.
