p6051
Bizen plate
This Bizen dish by Takashi Soga is a challenge to capture the beauty of the past, created by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen was fired.

To replicate the firing style of the Old Bizen era, the piece was fired in a kiln made entirely of earth—eschewing the firebricks that did not exist at the time—which defies the conventional wisdom of modern kiln firing.

Because the earth kiln itself transforms with every firing, the resulting pieces are characterized by constant change; this particular piece features the brightest scarlet-hued surface seen yet.

The scarlet hue is not the soft color of a light firing in an anagama kiln, but rather a robust, well-fired red that has emerged from the clay itself; it already possesses a refined luster across its entire surface, giving it the appearance of well-worn Old Bizen pottery.

The black fire-cord (hidasuki) markings, with their faint golden sheen, stand out beautifully against the red background, creating a striking contrast with the matte, sea-worn red surface reminiscent of ancient excavated Bizen ware.

The faithful, orthodox form further highlights the excellence of the clay and the firing process.

No box included
Diameter 19.5cm x 19.4cm x Height 3.7cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built an all-earth kiln—without the use of firebricks—in Kuguiri, Bizen City.

He became independent in 2013 and began his career as a ceramic artist.
