p6068
Shigaraki tea bowl
This Shigaraki tea bowl is by Tomio Ochi, who worked diligently at the kiln under the guidance of Anjin Abe, pouring his ever-unsatisfied creative passion into his pottery.
Using clay collected in Shigaraki in the past alongside Abe, this piece was fired multiple times, just like his Bizen works.

For this piece, Ochi aimed for a more intense firing, resulting in seven kiln firings. By thoroughly firing the Shigaraki clay, which naturally has a relatively high heat resistance, he has achieved a shimmering orange surface that appears as if coated in platinum.

Natural ash glaze in creamy hues is splashed across the front and the interior, with its unique pale greenish tone contrasting beautifully against the orange surface.

The form, crafted based on knowledge cultivated through the study of antique ceramics, is masterful. By shaping the entire piece with detailed carving, the surface resembles rocky terrain at a micro level, while maintaining the sharp, edgy silhouette of an old Bizen tea bowl at a macro level.

Ingenuity has also been applied to the interior sides; utilizing the gaps created by the carving—the "negative space"—the waist is widened in a way that is invisible from the exterior, creating a ripple-like convection when tea is prepared, which adds depth to the flavor.

Signed wooden box to be provided later
Diameter 12.1cm × 11.7cm × Height 9.1cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

Starting in 1969, while working for a company, he devoted himself to the study of painting and sculpture at Taka Art.

In 1976, he received instruction from Anjin Abe while serving as a kiln firing assistant in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the premises of Anjin Abe's workshop in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He applies his background in sculpture and painting to his creation of Bizen ware.
