p6078
Bizen Sake Cup
This Bizen sake cup is by Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen was fired.

To replicate the kiln-firing style of the Old Bizen era, the piece was fired in a kiln made entirely of earth—avoiding the use of modern refractory bricks—which defies the conventional wisdom of contemporary kiln firing.

The all-earth kiln itself acts as one massive piece of pottery, which is why the work exhibits an exquisite "tsuchiaji" (taste of the clay) that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches the quality of Old Bizen.

The base clay surface, a mixture of rich reddish-brown and dark brown, features erupted iron and embedded fine stones, creating a weathered texture with a refined austerity that could easily be mistaken for Old Bizen.

Furthermore, the deep crimson *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings, thoroughly baked into the surface, combine with the soft, rounded texture characteristic of an earth kiln to create a unique world view.

It is a stunning piece that one would hardly believe was made by a contemporary artist, and an intriguing work that fulfills the dream of using an Old Bizen sake cup.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before it can be shipped).
Diameter 6.5cm × 6.4cm × Height 5.3cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009 and built his own kiln made entirely of earth, without using refractory bricks, in Kugui, Bizen City, in 2012.

He became independent in 2013 and began his pottery career.
