p6108
Bizen ware plate
This Bizen ware plate by Takashi Soga is a challenge to the beauty of antiquity, created by reproducing the same environment in which ancient Bizen ware was fired.

To recreate the firing methods of the ancient Bizen era, the piece was fired in a kiln made entirely of clay, without the use of firebricks—which did not exist at the time—and in which modern firing conventions do not apply.

In Soga-sensei’s kiln, the clay structure itself undergoes transformation with every firing, a characteristic that causes the finish of the pieces to constantly evolve; this time, the firing produced the brightest scarlet surface seen yet.

The scarlet color itself is not the soft hue typical of a climbing kiln, but rather a vibrant red that has emerged as the clay color through a thorough, high-temperature firing. It already possesses an exquisite luster across the entire piece, reminiscent of the seasoned surface of antique Bizen ware.

The black *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings, with their faint golden sheen, contrast beautifully against the red background, creating an interesting effect that balances with the matte, sea-worn red surface characteristic of salvaged ancient Bizen.

The orthodox, faithful-to-the-basics form further highlights the quality of the clay and the excellence of the firing.

No box included
Diameter 19.1cm × 18.9cm × Height 3.7cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He apprenticed under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built a kiln made entirely of clay, without the use of firebricks, in Kukuicho, Bizen City.

He became independent in 2013 and began his career as a ceramic artist.
