p6113
Ibe Hassen Plate
This is an Ibe eight-sun plate by the master craftsman Mitsuru Isezaki, a man who loved Bizen ware and made significant contributions to Bizen.

A biography of his career from around 2004 is included, suggesting that this piece was created shortly before Master Isezaki passed away.

The mature ceramic technique of his later years is fully on display; from the rim, which has been pressed outward to a uniform width, to the comb-mark decorations adorning it, the plate is a joy to behold even just by holding it and gazing at it.

The area around the base on the underside shows the meticulous attention to detail expected of a master; the treatment of the base sides, carefully shaved with a spatula, is magnificent.

Though he primarily used a climbing kiln, true to his style, Master Isezaki excelled at producing a bright, vibrant appearance that in a good way belies the typical characteristics of a climbing kiln. The fine, scattered sesame-seed glaze (*tobigoma*) and the faint scarlet clay body visible through the *botamochi* markings are both wonderful, retaining the classic virtues of Bizen ware while possessing a refined, clean aesthetic.

Signed wooden box (with *shōhozan* lid) included.
Diameter: 22.4cm x 22.2cm; Height: 5.6cm

Master Mitsuru Isezaki was born in 1934 as the eldest son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki. He learned ceramic techniques from his father from a young age and later majored in sculpture in the Special Art Course at Okayama University.

As an authentic practitioner of tea ceramics, he pursued the aesthetics, clay qualities, and firing techniques of the Momoyama period.

He selectively used climbing kilns and medieval-style anagama kilns depending on the piece, and insisted on firing with split pine wood, never using electric or gas kilns.

He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1964 and received the Kaneshige Tōyō Prize in 1974.

In 1994, he received the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award, and in 1998, the 15th Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize.

In March of that same year, he was designated as a holder of an Okayama Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property.

He passed away in August 2011 at the age of 77.

Awards include: Kaneshige Tōyō Prize, Okayama Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award, Sanyo Shimbun Award, Okayama Nichinichi Shimbun Art and Culture Merit Award, Grand Prize at the Tea Ceremony Form Exhibition, and many others / Invited exhibitor at Prefectural exhibitions.
