p6122
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln, by Jumpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of the leading figure of the Kaneshige family, Kosuke Kaneshige.

Adhering to the traditional Kaneshige family method of clay preparation, this piece is made from clay crafted entirely by hand, without the use of a pug mill.

The clay, nurtured with great care, retains its color even amidst the intense firing that produces kiln-transmutation effects, displaying a truly elegant "tsuchiaji" (clay quality) that one can only describe as masterful.

The soft, gentle scarlet hue, which looks as if it were blushing, is deeply evocative, possessing the quintessential charm of Bizen ware that brings peace of mind just by looking at and touching it.

Although the entire piece features a rich, gray-toned ash-covered kiln-transmutation effect—a finish that often tends to be rough—the surface has been meticulously refined over time, resulting in a texture that is a pleasure to handle indefinitely.

While sake cups have tended to become larger in recent years, this classic size, reminiscent of his grandfather Toyo Kaneshige, is truly wonderful.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.1cm × 6.0cm × Height 5.4cm

Jumpei Kaneshige was born in Komaba, Tokyo, in 1972, as the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige.

He graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Waseda University in 1994.

In 2000, he completed his graduate studies in sculpture at Long Island University in New York, USA.

After returning to Japan, he studied under his father, Kosuke Kaneshige.
