p6144
Bizen gourd-shaped sake bottle
This Bizen gourd-shaped sake bottle is the work of Takashi Soga, who challenges himself to create ancient beauty by recreating the environment of the era when Old Bizen was fired.

To replicate the kiln-firing techniques of the Old Bizen period, he does not use firebricks, which did not exist at the time, but instead fires his pieces in a kiln made entirely of clay, where modern kiln-firing common sense does not apply.

The all-clay kiln acts as one massive piece of pottery itself, and because of this, it produces an exquisite clay texture that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches that of Old Bizen.

Inspired by masterpiece Old Bizen gourd-shaped sake bottles, the piece features indentations on the body, a unique tilt of the neck resulting from those indentations, and diamond-shaped pressed patterns.

Staying true to Soga's preference for thin and light vessels despite using a hand-turned wheel, the part above the neck is slender and supple, giving the piece an overall graceful form.

The unique scenery and exceptionally soft texture created by the clay kiln remain intact, and when I close my eyes and touch it, I lose track of time and find myself completely captivated.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before shipping).
Rim 2.4cm x Body diameter 9.1cm x Body diameter 9.1cm x Height 16.5cm Capacity approx. 360cc

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built an all-clay kiln without the use of firebricks in Kugu, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his career as a ceramic artist in 2013.
