p6219
Yohen Blue Tea Cup
Born in Inbe and a lover of Bizen ware since childhood, Takashi Baba finds his greatest joy in life through creating his works and firing his kilns. This is a new "Yohen Ao" (blue kiln-transmuted) teacup, fresh from the kiln.

This piece was fired around April 2021.

An evolution of the black Bizen ware for which Baba is well-known—achieved through his signature slip-coating technique—this teacup showcases a stunning "Yohen Ao" finish, where the ash-covered lower portion has transformed into a vibrant cobalt blue.

While the striking blue "Yohen Ao" glaze is certainly the focal point, the black areas of the piece also exhibit a unique gunmetal-like sheen, a result of the intense firing process.

Having stood directly in the path of the scorching heat during firing, the front and back of the piece feature an accumulation of "goma" (natural ash glaze) carried by the flames, creating dramatic, waterfall-like drips.

The unique shape, with its slightly tapered waist, adds a sense of movement while making the cup comfortable to hold, making this intense, kiln-transmuted piece perfect for everyday use.

The wide rim also makes it an excellent choice for a shochu cup.

No box included (a paulownia wood box can be made upon request).
Diameter 8.6cm × 8.3cm × Height 8.4cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ceramic artist Shosuke Baba.

Determined to become a potter from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his artistic perspective.

After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, he further honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became an independent artist in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He currently holds solo exhibitions primarily at department stores.
