p6413
Bizen sake cup
A brand-new Bizen sake cup, just out of the kiln by Junpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of the leading master of the Kaneshige lineage, Kosuke Kaneshige.

This is his latest work, just pulled from the kiln in September 2021.

Staying true to the Kaneshige family tradition, this piece was crafted using clay prepared entirely by hand without the use of a pug mill.

The finish is quintessential of the Kaneshige family's "yellow sesame" (ki-goma) style; the thick application of yellow ash has pooled to form scorched sesame (koge-goma), and the clay surface has a rich, chocolate-like hue.

Furthermore, as this piece was placed in the "hi-mae" (the prime spot in front of the flame) typically reserved for tea bowls, the sesame glaze on the rim has melted beautifully, resulting in a smooth texture that is gentle on the lips, just like a tea bowl.

It packs a variety of essences into a compact form reminiscent of a tea bowl, featuring strong, swirling wheel marks in the spacious interior—a bold and challenging design that reflects Junpei's studious and curious nature.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 8.7cm × 8.4cm × Height 4.3cm

Junpei Kaneshige was born in Komaba, Tokyo, in 1972 as the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige.

In 1994, he graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Waseda University.

In 2000, he completed his graduate studies in sculpture at Long Island University in New York, USA.

He then returned to Japan to study under his father, Kosuke Kaneshige.
